ANALOGUE:
A term used to denote a watch dial with hands rather than digital display
ARBOR:
The mechanical axle of a moving part; on the balance it is called the staff, on the lever it is called the arbor.
BALANCE WHEEL:
A device shaped like a wheel that does for a watch what a pendulum does for a clock (the regulating device).
BEAT:
Refers to the tick or sound of a watch; about 1/5 of a second. The sound is produced by the escape wheel striking the pallets.
BEZEL:
The rim that covers the dial(face) and retains the crystal.
BOW:
The ring that is looped at the pendant of a pocket watch or pendant watch to which a chain of fob is attached.
CALIBRE:
Size of a watch movement also to describe the model, style, or shape of a watch movement.
CASE:
The protective covering surrounding a watch movement. Primarily it is made from base metal, stainless steel, gold,etc., and includes a bezel, back and crystal.
CHRONOGRAPH:
A movement that can be started and stopped to measure short time intervals and return to zero. A stopwatch does not keep the time of day.
CROWN:
A winding button.
CRYSTAL:
The "glass". A mineral or synthetic covering over the dial of the watch.
DIAL:
The face of a watch.
DIVERS WATCH:
A watch with a specially constructed case to withstand the entry of water at 330 or 660 feet. It often has a screwed down crown to prevent it from being pulled into a setting position while under water. Usually equipped with a rotating bezel to enable a diver to ascertain the minutes of air supply left in his tank.
ELECTRONIC WATCH:
Newer type of watch using quartz and electronics to produce a high degree of accuracy.
FOB:
A decorative short strap or chain.
HOROLOGY:
The study of time keeping.
HUNTER CASE:
A pocket watch case with a covered face that must be opened to see the watch dial.
INCABLOC:
A patented shock absorbing device which permits the end stone of the balance to give when the watch is subjected to an impact or jar. First used in 1933.
JEWEL:
A bearing made of a ruby or other type of jewel: The four types of jewels include; cap jewel,hole jewel,roller jewel, and pallet jewel.
LUGS:
The metal extensions of a wrist watch case to which the bracelet or band are attached usually with a spring bar.
MAINSPRING:
A flat spring coiled or wound to supply power to the watch.
MICRO SECOND:
A millionth of a second.
MOVEMENT:
The works of a mechanical watch without the case or dial. (quartz watches have modules)
NANOSECOND:
One billionth of a second.
PENDULUM:
A swinging rod and weight suspended below the clock movement. It accurately determines the rate of operation of the movement.
PLATE:
A watch has a front plate and a back plate or top and bottom plate. The works are in between.
POSITION:
As adjusted to five positions; a watch may differ in its time keeping accuracy as it lays in different positions. Due to the lack of poise, changes in the centre of gravity, a watch can be adjusted to six positions: dial up,dial down,stem up,stem down,stem left, stem right.
SAPPHIRE CRYSTAL:
Scratch resistant glass with a hardness of 9. Mineral glass has a hardness of 5.
SHOCK RESISTANT:
Under Federal Trade Commission rules, a watch should not stop, or its daily rate be affected by more than 60 seconds, when dropped 3 feet onto a hardwood surface, to be called shock resistant.
SKELETON WATCH:
A watch made so the viewer can see the works. Plates are pierced and very decorative.
SOLAR YEAR:
365 days, 5 hours, 48 minutes, 49.7 seconds
SUN DIAL:
A device using a gnomon or style that cast a shadow over a graduated dial as the sun progresse, giving solar time.
TEMPUS FUGIT:
Latin phrase meaning "Time Flies" usually engraved on a decorative panel on the clock dial.
TRITIUM:
A material that glows in the dark. Can be identified as the green material in the hands and above the markers of an analogue watch dial.
WATER RESISTANT:
To be called "water-resistant",the Federal Trade Commission requires that a watch not admit moisture if immersed for 5 minutes at a depth of 34 feet (15 lbs. per square inch) and for at least 5 minutes at a depth of 113 feet (50 lbs. per square inch)
